বাংলাদেশের ছুঁড়ে দেওয়া ৩০৭ রানের বিশাল লক্ষ্য তাড়া করতে নেমে আফগানরা তখন সুবিধাজনক অবস্থানে নেই। ৩ উইকেট হারানোর পর ঘুরে দাঁড়ানোর চেষ্টা চালাচ্ছিলেন ওপেনার রহমত শাহ ও পাঁচে নামা নাজিবউল্লাহ জাদরান। দুজন থিতু হয়ে গেলে উইকেটের জন্য খানিক মরিয়া হয়ে ওঠে বাংলাদেশ।

ইনিংসের ১৭তম ওভারে বল তুলে দেওয়া হয় সাকিবের হাতে। ওভারের দ্বিতীয় বলেই দেখা মিলত কাঙ্ক্ষিত ব্রেক থ্রুর। তবে লং অফে নাজিবউল্লাহর হাঁকানো শট তালুবন্দী করতে ব্যর্থ হন শরিফুল ইসলাম। উল্টো চার রান পেয়ে যায় সফরকারী দল।

এতে বাংলাদেশের উইকেট তুলে নেওয়ার ক্ষুধাও আরও বেড়ে যায়। এমন এক পরিস্থিতিতেই সাকিব দেখান উদার দৃষ্টিভঙ্গি। পরের বলে নাজিবউল্লাহর শট ছুটে যায় নন স্ট্রাইকিং প্রান্তের দিকে, যেখানে ছিলেন রহমত শাহ। সাকিবের অজান্তেই তার হাত গলে বল আঘাত করে স্টাম্পে। অন ফিল্ড আম্পায়াররা দ্বিধায় থাকায় সিদ্ধান্ত জানানোর দায়িত্ব নেন তৃতীয় আম্পায়ার।

তৃতীয় আম্পায়ার কিছুক্ষণ পর্যালোচনার পর আউটের সংকেত দেন। তবে টিভি রিপ্লে দেখে একটু ধোঁয়াশা ছিলই- যে আদৌ বল সাকিবের হাত স্পর্শ করেছে কি না। রিপ্লে দেখে নিশ্চিত হওয়া যাচ্ছিল না পুরোপুরি। তৃতীয় আম্পায়ারের সিদ্ধান্ত মেনে রহমত শাহ যখন সাজঘরের পথ ধরবেন, তখন সবাইকে অবাক করে দিয়ে সাকিব জানান- বল হাতে হাতে স্পর্শ করেছে কি না তা তিনি নিশ্চিত নন। এতে তৃতীয় আম্পায়ার তার সিদ্ধান্ত পরিবর্তন করেন। জীবন পান রহমত।

সে সময় ৪৯ বলে ৩৬ রান করে অপরাজিত ছিলেন তিনি। সাকিবের বদান্যতায় ইনিংস বড় করার সুযোগ পান। সেই সুযোগ কাজে লাগিয়ে তুলে নেন অর্ধশতক। সাজঘরে ফেরার আগে ৫২ রান করেন তিনি, হাঁকান ৪টি চার।

তবে সাকিবের এমন সিদ্ধান্তকে স্বাগত জানাচ্ছে ক্রিকেট দুনিয়া। সমর্থকদের বড় এক অংশ সাকিবের এই সাহসী সিদ্ধান্তের প্রশংসায় পঞ্চমুখ। আম্পায়ারের সিদ্ধান্ত থেকে সুবিধা আদায় না করায় সাকিবের পাশাপাশি প্রশংসা পাচ্ছে বাংলাদেশ দলও। বল হাতে এদিন বেশ উজ্জ্বল ছিলেন সাকিব। আগের ম্যাচে খরুচে বোলিং করলেও এদিন ১০ ওভার বল করে ২ উইকেট শিকার করেন ৩৮ রানের খরচায়।
